I don’t usually write ‘life updates’, I’m not that type of blogger. I prefer to write about the work that I’m doing or an experience I’ve had but as I’m on furlough leave from work and haven’t left the house since the beginning of March, I thought I’d give this a try. Recently I have been thinking about how one day, kids will read about this lockdown in their history books so maybe this blog will be a primary source for their essays!
Before I was put on furlough leave, I started volunteering with the Disability Law Service, a charity that has been providing free legal advice and representation for disabled people since 1975. I have received disability employment rights training from them and as part of my job, deliver this training to universities across London. This is one of my favourite things to do because it educates and empowers young disabled people to ask for what they need to do their best at work. About a week before I decided to stop commuting into London, I started volunteering with the Disability Law Service one day a week to build up knowledge of employment law.
Sadly, I have had to stop doing this volunteering while on furlough, but I am very happy to announce that I am now a Trustee of the Disability Law Service! I am really looking forward to this new challenge and the opportunity to help the charity in these difficult but essential times. If you would like to learn more about the Disability Law Service and how to support them please go to https://dls.org.uk/.
In other news, I’m going back to university! Well, sort of! When I was put on furlough and feeling sorry for myself, my mom suggested I look into the Open University. I have wanted to do further education for a while but I have always put off doing it because of work. With my furlough looking like it is going to last a while I have officially signed up to do another undergraduate degree. In 6 years (yes really!) I will have a BA in History and Politics from the Open University. I am a self-proclaimed history and politics nerd – you can read my reviews of some historic places here – so I cannot wait to start the degree in October this year. I will be doing it part-time and my first module is Discovering the arts and humanities. Quite a change from my law degree! You can read all about the degree I’ll be doing here.
My final little update is this little lady!
My family have a new puppy – meet Meg. She is a 9-week-old Goldador (golden retriever and lab cross). It’s pretty safe to say we are in love with her already and it’s only been a week. She is such a welcome distraction from everything that is going on. Follow my Instagram for lots of photos of my three beautiful dogs.
If you liked this little life update and want to read more, please let me know! I have a few post ideas in mind but if there is something in particular you want me to write about, drop me an email on hello@emmavogelmann.com
Stay safe and stay home!
